Description

The Alden Landis Memorial Scholarship was created to honor the memory of Alden Landis, who died on December 20, 2011 at the age of 23 while serving in the Peace Corps in Mozambique, Africa. The essential theme of this scholarship fund is to memorialize the values that Alden stood for, and to encourage others by reflecting the uniquely inspiring way she lived. Through this fund we will help keep her spirit alive and allow many others to be sustained by that spirit. We want to foster a community of students who will consider applying for the scholarship and who will learn about Alden. We hope that Alden’s memory will help remind successful candidates to keep their minds and hearts open past borders, stay curious, and make the most of every adventure.

The scholarship is intended for current high school students (grades 10-12) who demonstrate financial need and who successfully apply for enrollment in a summer study abroad, service trip, a domestic language emersion program, or a gap year program run by a 501(c)(3) public charity. Students must demonstrate a commitment to community service and learning about other cultures. Students who are current seniors in high school and are pursuing a gap year program for the 2022-2023 academic year are eligible to apply for the scholarship.

Please note that this scholarship can only be applied to the tuition or program cost of the summer study abroad or service trip and, in some cases, travel costs.  Students are responsible for all other costs associated with the program, including travel, preparation, or incidental expenses required for participation in the program.

Finally, the student has applied to travel abroad through OneWorld Now! OR Global Visionaries, or has been accepted by another organization whose credibility and reliability can be confirmed by Seattle Foundation, such as United Planet or Youth For Understanding. If your organization is not listed, please contact scholarships@seattlefoundation.org to see if your program is eligible. Pre-determined eligible organizations: Council on International Educational Exchange, Cross-Cultural Solutions, Global Visionaries, OneWorld Now!, United Planet, and Youth for Understanding (USA).
